NHS Health Scotland welcomes the Scottish Parliament Health and Sport Committee’s findings of the need for a comprehensive, long term, cross portfolio approach to tackling obesity. We are particularly pleased to see the commitment to focus on reducing health inequalities in the development of the new strategy.  Levels of overweight and obesity are higher in those living in our poorest areas, which also experience lower income and lower educational attainment.

Commenting on the announcement, Gerry McLaughlin, NHS Health Scotland Chief Executive, said:

“NHS Health Scotland fully supports the Scottish Government’s commitment to address obesity, especially in tackling health inequalities.   We will provide support in the development of the Scottish Government’s new obesity strategy this year, building on our wide range of activity to make it easier for people to be more active and make healthier food choices.”
